The Trussell Trust have calculated that “20,247,042 meals were given to people in food poverty in 2013/14 by the three main food aid providers. This is a 54 percent increase on 2012/13″.

It reported ”

‘There is no evidence to support the claim that increased food aid provision is driving demand. All available evidence, both in the UK and internationally, points in the opposite direction. Put simply, there is more need and informal food aid providers are trying to help”

Instead rising food cost, cuts to the welfare system, benefit sanctions, reduced working hours and low wages are to blame. There has been a record number of people in work who are using food banks.
